Introduction

METFORMIN

XX is oral biguanide antidiabetic agent, introduced in 1950s. It reduces elevated blood glucose concentration in diabetic patients, but it does not increase insulin secretion. XX is used alone or in combination with insulin or chlorpropamide. Most useful in overweight subjects, where it supresses appetite. May cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Oral absorption of Metformin is found to be 55% ±5. Volume of distribution is found to be 63-276 litre and plasma protien binding is negligible. Presystemic metabolism is noted to be 0.5% ±0.5 Renal Excretion accounts for 90% and plasma half life is 1.5-4.5 hr.
