XX is a sympathomimetic agent, closely related to ephedrine. XX is used in various cough and cold preparations as a nasal decongestant, provides relief from the nasal or sinus congestion.

DEXTROMETHORPHAN

XX is antitussive agent. Chemically XX is identified as morphinan,3-methoxy-17-methyl-, (9a,13a,14a )-, hydrobrmide. XX is the d isomer of the codeine analog of levophanol. In contrast to the l isomer, dextromethorphan does not possess analgesic or addictive properties, and its principal use is as a cough suppressant.

Pharmacokinetics

Oral absorption of Pseudoephedrine is found to be 96.5% ±1.5. Volume of distribution is found to be 2-3 l/kg . Presystemic metabolism is noted to be 0.5% ±0.5 and metabolism is reported Hepatic. Renal Excretion accounts for > 90% and plasma half life is 5.4-8 hr.

Presystemic metabolism is noted to be 75% ±5 and metabolism is reported extensive by liver. Renal Excretion accounts for > 50% and plasma half life is 2.7-3.3 hr.
